The last stop, at the far left, is early Earth, 4 billion years ago.

The times you can walk are marked on the timeline. Stop at one and press Enter.

The world opens on a slow camera glide. Press Start walking, then walk with W, A, S and D or the arrow keys and look around with the mouse. Shift runs, Space jumps and Esc pauses, where you can travel to another time or turn the sound off.

You're an invisible time traveller, so the animals ignore you. They wander from one grazing spot to the next and now and then break into a run. Look at one and a line at the bottom of the screen gives its name, its size, what it ate and when it lived.

Walking needs a computer with a keyboard and a mouse. On a phone you can still spin the globe and read about each era.

The four worlds and their animals

Early Earth, 4 billion years ago: black lava fields and lava lakes, with three smoking volcanoes under a huge Moon. It's about 12 m long, and it lived right up to the asteroid impact that ended the age of dinosaurs.

In the Ice Age, walk out onto the frozen lake and listen to the wind.

On the home page, slide the timeline slowly back from today and watch the Atlantic close and the continents join into Pangaea.

What's real and what's guessed

The animals, their sizes and their dates come from the fossil record, and each era's page says who lived when. The Late Cretaceous bends time and place to fit everyone into one valley. T. rex and Triceratops really did live side by side, but Parasaurolophus lived a few million years earlier, and Velociraptor lived in Mongolia and China. Velociraptor was also the size of a turkey and covered in feathers, which its model leaves out.

The animals are simple low-poly models, and the plants are stand-ins for the real prehistoric ones. The globe's maps come from the PALEOMAP elevation models of Scotese and Wright (2018); the Ice Age map lowers the sea by 120 m and adds the ice sheets, roughly outlined. Early Earth is a best guess, since nobody saw it. The colours of its sky are guesses, and its Moon, which really was much closer then, is drawn bigger still so it stands out.

Prehistoric Walk is free, with no account and nothing to install: prehistoric-walk.tukka.dev.
