Sun glare while driving comes down to three things you can work out in advance: which way the road runs, the time of day and the time of year.

I made a free map, Glare Map, that works this out for every national highway in India, for any date and time.

When the sun counts as in your eyes

The sun has to be low and close to straight ahead. Glare research puts the start of disabling glare at 19 to 25° from your line of sight, and a nationwide study of crashes in Japan counted sun glare out to 45°. Once the sun is more than about 25° above the horizon, the car's roof and the sun visor block it.

So glare comes in the hour or two after sunrise and before sunset, and only on roads that point roughly at the sun.

Why westbound roads are worst in winter

On 21 December the sun sets a little south of west, at a bearing of about 244° whether you're in Jorhat, Delhi or Mumbai. On 21 June it sets a little north of west, at about 297°.

A road running west-southwest therefore catches the low afternoon sun from October to February, and a road running west-northwest catches it in summer. A road running north to south almost never does: even in June, when the sun rises and sets furthest north, it's more than 60° off a northbound driver's line of sight when it's low.

Mornings mirror this. Roads running east-southeast get the winter sunrise, and roads running east-northeast get the summer one.

The east gets it earlier

All of India keeps one clock, so in the east the sun sets much earlier by it. On 21 December it sets at about 4:25 PM in Jorhat, 4:57 PM in Kolkata, 5:29 PM in Delhi and 6:06 PM in Mumbai. In Assam the low winter sun lands in the middle of the afternoon drive home.

An example: Sivasagar to Jorhat

This is the drive that started Glare Map. The 57 km on NH 2 and NH 715 head west-southwest, at about 238° overall. On 21 December at 3:30 PM the sun is 10° up at a bearing of 237°, dead ahead.

On the 15th of each month, the sun is in your eyes on this road at about these times:

October: 2:50 to 4:45 PM

November: 2:15 to 4:20 PM

December: 2:20 to 4:20 PM

January: 2:35 to 4:40 PM

February: 3:00 to 5:05 PM

From March to September the sun sets further north, off to the right, and the drive is mostly clear. The drive back to Sivasagar gets the sun at dawn instead, from April to August, at about 4:30 to 6:00 AM.

On 17 October, leaving Sivasagar at 3:00 PM means about 41 of the 69 minutes with the sun in your eyes. Leaving by 1:30 PM, or after 4:45 PM, avoids it.

Check your own road

On Glare Map:

Pick your state at the top left.
